The Quickcam Orbit AF
I was recently gifted one of these and I thought I’d write about it. First of all, it is an amazingly thoughtful gift, in my opinion, for anyone whom you’d talk to on a regular basis, and the quality, at 2 MP as opposed to the standard 1.3, is spectacular when capturing or recording. Streaming with skype was another issue, but I suppose I’d blame the graininess on the application itself and a bad connection on both ends. Still, the support for this device is rather amazing, especially when it comes to its autofocusing and light-adjustment abilities (perfect for webcamming at night ;-)).
Now, time to discuss the fun part- its ability to follow you around. This, while cool, verges on slightly creepy, especially when it is suspended on the plastic stick-mount that it comes with. It actually looks rather like a Terminator-esque eyeball on a stick. On a more technical note, I suppose, at this stage, I’d consider the feature more a novelty than anything else. Turning this on often results in camera being very laggy, especially while sending data, and it doesn’t always capture your direction if your movements are too quick/deft.
That’s about all I can say about it. Perhaps I shall update you with a video later. ;-))
