9600GT TV-Out Problems

Filed under: Hardware, Troubleshooting, Windows — Bhavya on May 25, 2008 @ 11:04 pm

I recently got a 9600GT for the purpose of playing certain games on my computer, and since putting it into my machine, I’ve had a really good experience. Yesterday, however, I tried hooking my TV up to my desktop so a friend of mine could watch a movie while I worked, and no matter what I tried, nothing seemed to work. I tried fiddling with the options in the Nvidia control panel but it remained undetected. I tried rolling back drivers to the default ones used by Vista. I then tried reinstalling the drivers (to version 175.16), and that didn’t work either. I was seriously on the verge of giving up till I found this.

It seems that a lot of new video cards send out a signal via the first pin of their s-video out port and wait for a return signal via the third pin to check if a TV is actually there. Not all TVs, however, seem to realise this, which was definitely true in the case of my tv (such a relief)!

Basically, what you do is this:

  1. Find a piece of wire, any wire at all. If you have none, you can strip an old ethernet cable or a tie tag with a pair of scissors like I did. A 75 Ohm resistor will suffice as well.
  2. Cut the wire at about 2cm and fold it into a small U.
  3. Push the ends into the first and third pinholes of the S-video jack, but ensure that the second hole remains uncovered; you don’t have to push the wire that far in! If this does not work, try the fourth and sixth pinholes as some cards use those holes instead. Be really careful not to bump your head if your desktop is under your desk. :-))
  4. Get back to your machine and have the Nvidia control panel detect your TV (usually under Display>Set up Multiple Displays). Your TV should be detected now!
  5. Now carefully remove the wire and insert your S-video cable into the jack. Go to your desktop and set it to the right resolution.

That’s it! Simple eh? I’m fairly sure it works for other video cards as well, though I haven’t tried this in Linux yet; I’ll update this when I do try it out. :-))

Hopefully this was useful to any of you that have had the same problem.

A warm welcome to Karmabubble.com, the humble abode of forgotten designs, finally rescued from the depths of paint-chipped cabinets, handle-less drawers, and old harddrives. Hopefully you will find some of these works thought-provoking, perhaps even inspiring, and, if not, charming at the very least. Within these pages, you will find the following products of my imagination: digital art, photography, templates, software, and occasional musings which I have deemed fit to share. All my work is here before you, for you to scrutinize or to sit back and just regard. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you enjoy your stay.
